Canine first aid is an essential skill for anyone who works with dogs. Whether you’re a dog groomer, dog walker, dog daycare provider, boarder or other pet professional, knowing how to recognise an emergency and respond appropriately can make a real difference.
At FDM Academy in Cambridgeshire, we’re proud to have seen a growing interest in canine first aid during our first year! So far, 19 students have completed the iPET Network Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid with FDM Academy, gaining valuable knowledge and practical understanding to support dogs in emergency situations. In addition to 10 owners have completed canine first aid training, helping them feel confident in emergencies with their own pets.

What Is the iPET Network Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid?
The iPET Network Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid is designed to provide learners with important knowledge and practical understanding of canine first aid and emergency support.
For people who work with dogs, canine first aid training can be an important addition to their professional skills. Dogs can become unwell or injured unexpectedly, and being prepared can help you remain calm and take appropriate action while further veterinary assistance is sought.
The training helps learners develop their understanding of how to recognise situations where a dog may require emergency assistance and what appropriate first-aid measures may be available.
Canine First Aid for Dog Professionals
For dog professionals, canine first aid knowledge can be particularly valuable.
Groomers, dog walkers, daycare providers, boarders and other professionals regularly have responsibility for dogs in their care. Having appropriate training can help professionals feel more prepared to deal with unexpected situations.
While canine first aid training does not replace veterinary care, it can help provide the knowledge and confidence needed to respond appropriately in an emergency and understand when veterinary attention is required.
For anyone building a career working with dogs, canine first aid can therefore be a valuable part of their continuing professional development.
First Aid for Dog Owners Too
One of the things we’ve found particularly rewarding during our first year is seeing that canine first aid training isn’t only relevant to people working in the pet industry.
For dog owners, having an understanding of canine first aid can provide greater confidence when faced with an unexpected situation. Knowing what to look for, how to respond appropriately and when to seek veterinary assistance can all be valuable skills for responsible dog ownership.
Why Is Canine First Aid Important?
Dogs are naturally curious and active, which means accidents and unexpected health emergencies can happen. Whether a dog is in a grooming salon, out on a walk, staying at daycare or simply at home, being prepared can make an important difference.
Canine first aid training can help you:
- Recognise potential canine emergencies.
- Understand appropriate first-aid responses.
- Develop greater confidence when dealing with an injured or unwell dog.
- Understand when professional veterinary assistance is needed.
- Provide appropriate emergency support while further help is being arranged.
The aim isn’t to replace a veterinary professional. Instead, canine first aid training helps people understand how they may be able to respond appropriately during those important moments before veterinary care is available.
Our First Year of Canine First Aid Training
Reaching 29 people trained in canine emergency support during our first year is an achievement we’re incredibly proud of.
The 19 learners who completed the iPET Network Level 3 Award in Canine First Aid have gained a recognised qualification that can complement their work with dogs, while the additional 10 participants have developed valuable knowledge specifically to help support their own dogs.
For us, the most important part is that more people now have the knowledge and confidence to understand what to do when a dog needs emergency assistance.
Whether you work professionally with dogs or simply want to be better prepared for your own pet, canine first aid training can be a worthwhile investment in your knowledge and skills.
